When I brushed with baking soda/hydrogen peroxide, my gums turned white & burned temporarily?

3 Comments 21 March 2010

I mixed hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and brushed my teeth with it to whiten them for the first time, and the gum around two teeth on the bottom left side turned white and burned horribly. I swished with water and then mouthwash in an attempt to stop the pain. It helped a little, but it still burned and was white for about 5 minutes.

Is this normal? I figured maybe the gum was infected or had bacteria or something and the peroxide was cleaning it or something. I wasn’t entirely sure.
Any ideas?
Should I do this again?
