Generally when we get older the teeth should change their colour over a long period of time and when we get to a point when the teeth get darker something triggers in our brains and want to make the change back to white again. This trigger point can be when we look at pictures of our teeth when we was younger or maybe meet an old friend who has really white teeth and then this triggers a desire to get brighter looking teeth. It is best advice not to leave it too long before getting the teeth whitened as sometimes the enamel will get penetrated and this will change the colour of the dentin which is the structure underneath and this is more difficult to whiten. By catching the staining before it gets too dark makes it easier to whiten and also to keep the teeth looking really white. Dark teeth in most cases will whiten fine but darkened dentin can be an issue. Most whitening treatments will be done by a peroxide based gel as this is perfectly fine to whiten the teeth without damaging the enamel. Mostly hydrogen peroxide is used in different grades ranging from 1% right up to 35% depending on the type of staining and also if sensitivity is an issue. Teeth whitening is performed by soaking the enamel in the gel for anything from one hour using the zoom or laser whitening systems or by sleeping in some specially moulded trays which are supplied by the dentists. Any product or service that does not soak the enamel is unlikely to work that well because the bleaching component in the gel will not whiten the teeth. Staining gets built in to the enamel and this takes a while as previously stated so you need time to soak the enamel to release it. If you have never had whitening before it is best to keep you mind open to how white your teeth might look. One thing is for sure is the teeth cannot be whitened more than their colour when you was in your late teens and early twenties. At this age the teeth are as white as they are likely to appear and then it is all down hill after that!Another big thing to remember in you quest to get brighter looking teeth is to consider whitening as an ongoing activity otherwise the teeth will re-stain and also never sacrifice visits to the dentist in exchange for teeth whitening as they are very different things. Good dental hygiene and health will help keep the teeth healthy and whiter. So if you are looking to enhance your smile then go for it as the benefits for being able to smile without worrying about the colour of your teeth is a wonderful thing.
