Will I get a Better Result From Professional Teeth Whitening Services?

No Comments 21 January 2012

Have you noticed all the teeth whitening products that are available today? A casual stroll down the aisles of your favorite pharmacy or superstore reveals shells filled with products promising a whiter, sexier smile. Almost everyone would love to have whiter teeth. If you struggle with stains and discoloration, you may find it difficult to smile. A bright, Hollywood smile is considered by many to be more youthful and attractive. Because whiter teeth are in such high demand, there seems to be a new teeth whitening product released every day. But are they really effective? Can you achieve good results on your own at home, or do you need to go for professional teeth whitening?
At first glance, over-the-counter and professional teeth whiteners may seem very similar. They both come with a tray that fits over your teeth. The tray is filled with tooth whitening gel and placed on your teeth for a short period of time every day for a couple of weeks. With each treatment, stains are removed and your teeth get whiter. Teeth whitening gel usually contain some form of peroxide, which penetrates your tooth enamel and removes stains through the process of oxidation.
Even though they look very much the same, there are actually several differences between tooth whitening products you can buy locally and professional teeth whitening treatments performed by your dentist. First of all, the teeth whitening gel used in most over-the-counter kits has a much lower strength than professional tooth whitener. Since over-the-counter preparations are used without supervision, there was concern that the higher concentrations used in professional tooth whitener might not be safe. The higher concentration of peroxide means that professional teeth whitening treatments will achieve more dramatic results.
When you purchase an over-the-counter tooth whitening kit, the trays that are included usually come in a one-size-fits-all design. As you know, one-size-fits-all usually means that one-size-fits-none-perfectly. Since there won’t be an exact fit to your teeth, there may not be optimal contact between your teeth and teeth whitening gel. There’s also a chance that the tray may irritate your gums or other parts of your mouth where the fit isn’t perfect. When you get professional teeth whitening, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and create a tray specifically for you. This custom fit ensures better contact between the gel and your teeth and reduces the chance of gum irritation.
A professional teeth whitening process will probably also include some kind of extra protective measures to protect your gums from the oxidizing action of the peroxide gel. With over-the-counter products, there is no extra protection for your gums provided.
When you go to your dentist for professional teeth whitening, the entire process is supervised. Your dentist will start by determining the reason behind your stains and discoloration and to make sure that you’re a good candidate for teeth whitening. Certain kinds of stains may not respond well, even to professional tooth whitener. It would be better to know this before you spend money for teeth whitening products. If you’re dentist believes that whitening will work well for you, he can match the specific type of technique that you need for your specific situation. He will provide spot checks throughout the process, and will follow-up when the whitening is done to help keep your teeth as white as possible. With over-the-counter teeth whitening products, you’re pretty much on your own. If they don’t work, there’s really not much you can do about it.
By the way, you should realize that some people should not try tooth whitening of any kind. Tooth whitening is not recommended for anyone under the age of 16. Children are especially susceptible to nerve irritation and tooth sensitivity caused by teeth whitening products. Women who are pregnant and mothers who are nursing should avoid teeth whitening treatments. Obviously if you have allergies to peroxide you should avoid using any kind of peroxide gel.
Regardless of whether you use over-the-counter kits or visit your dentist for professional teeth whitening, try not to have unrealistic expectations. Experts recommend that your teeth should actually only be slightly whiter than the whites of your eyes. So don’t let Hollywood dictate how you think you should look. Find a look and a smile that’s right for you.

Fort Worth Cosmetic Dentist Could You Benefit from Teeth Whitening Strips?

No Comments 05 November 2010

If you have been considering teeth whitening, then you have probably heard of the teeth whitening strips available for sale. This is a convenient product to be used at home, and these strips are made from polyethylene coated with hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent, and there are normally two sets of strips within a whitening kit. One of the strips is designed for the lower teeth, and the other strip is intended to be used on the top teeth. To begin the whitening process, you will start to bleach your teeth by pressing the strips onto the surface of your teeth. You have to leave the teeth whitening strips in place for up to 30 minutes over 14 days, depending upon the strength of the product that you have purchased. There are different strength consistencies available in over-the-counter teeth whitening strips, ranging from 6% to 10%. Many people prefer the use of the whitening strips because they are more comfortable than a teeth whitening tray, and they can be used for a shorter amount of time. However, a downfall to teeth whitening strips is that they rely upon hydrogen peroxide for the whitening process. Hydrogen peroxide has to be used in a high concentration to whiten the teeth so it is often not recommended by dentists. Many dentists also do not recommend using this ingredient at home. Dentists commonly recommend carbamide peroxide to whiten the teeth in a teeth whitening tray. Hydrogen peroxide also poses potential side effects of gum irritation and sensitive teeth. These are only temporary side effects, but if they do occur, you will need to use less of a concentration of the bleaching agent. The lower concentration will give the same result as a higher concentration, but it will take longer in the process. There are other teeth whitening products that can be used at home, such as custom-made dental trays made by your dentist. These are often preferred to use because they will not cause irritation since they do not contact the gums. These custom trays are becoming more widely available if you are seeing a cosmetic dentist for treatment. A custom-made tray to be used at home can be more affordable than an in office dental teeth bleaching treatment. Depending upon your budget and lifestyle, you may want to consider the use of the custom-made dental tray for at-home teeth whitening because it is accurate since it is fitted to your mouth. This product is much more effective because it will not cause any side effects of gum irritation and teeth sensitivity since it is fitted perfectly to the shape of your teeth. This custom-made tray may be slightly more expensive than the whitening strips bought over the counter, but it will provide long-term and accurate results in sparkling teeth!

Professional Teeth Whitening Options from your Dentist

No Comments 23 October 2010

Having a gorgeous smile is something that can be very alluring to somebody else. . It adds another level of self-assurance to being in public and in contact with people. Haven’t you felt this way each time you left the dentist after even a basic cleaning? However, that really bright, white smile is something that can only be attained by a professional dentist, most of which do offer such services. Laser Teeth CleaningLaser systems for cleaning teeth has become more popular in the last few years. Typically such an scheduled appointment takes no longer than 60 minutes and can remove persistent teeth coloring resulting from cigarettes and coffee or tea. As a result of advance technology, the price of such a treatment is now accessible to everyone, and not just famous actors. One of the many advantages of the laser teeth whitening technique is there is no soreness. Since many people relate discomfort with the dentist, this treatment does not cause pain and is a easy process. A very nice benefit to the laser whitening is it is normally a one-time treatment. Before you undergo the laser teeth whitening, you will have a regular cleaning to make sure your teeth are primed well for the method and to eliminate any plaque. Most of the time, unless you are having a deep cleaning, the whitening can be executed directly after your typical cleaning. If you have sensitive teeth, the laser whitening system is a plus since it is very gentle on teeth and will not cause any sensitivities. Traditional Teeth Cleaning MethodMany dentists use the bleach whitening system. First, the patient’s teeth experience a thorough cleaning as normal and then polished and then each tooth is covered with whitening solution. The only area of the teeth this is applied to is the front piece of the teeth and usually comprises of cabarnide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Based upon on the bleaching agent utilized, it may call for a specific light, which is the curing light and stays on the teeth for about one hour. When the correct color of white is attained, the teeth are rinsed and usually a fluoride treatment is then applied. Regardless of the approach your dental office suggests, you are sure to enjoy a better smile and many people find that when their teeth are bright, they smile more. There are many home-whitening products on the market which at first may seem to be a big savings, but in my personal experience your family dentist will be able to offer a much better, safer and more customized service, that will last much longer than store-bought cleaning kits. You should also keep in mind that if you have had any dental work, a dentist can adjust the application on that surface so as not to create inconsistent or damaging reactions a home teeth whitening kit may result in.
