The Side Effect of Teeth Whitening

No Comments 13 March 2010

Teeth whitening has become popular nowadays. Everyone wants to have perfect set of white teeth. It gives us more self confidence and boosts our ego. However, there are side effects in teeth whitening. One of the effects is the increased sensitivity to heat or cold. This increased in sensitivity is seen as the minor side effect of teeth whitening treatment and it goes away after the treatment is over. However, if your teeth are already overly sensitive to temperature, then you should be careful in choosing and using teeth whitening method. There are many methods available for applying teeth whitening agent to your teeth. One is the popular teeth whitening strips. These whitening strips are made of very thin plastic impregnated with the whitening agent. These strips are designed to adhere to your teeth when applied onto them properly. Another method is the tray type system, a system that uses a plastic tray to hold the teeth whitening agent next to your teeth. Also available teeth whitening methods are gels that contain the whitening agent. These gels have thick consistency which allows them to be applied to your teeth and stay until removed. The sensitivity to temperature is caused by the main ingredient that is commonly used in most teeth whitening products, either carbomide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These compounds are forms of teeth whitening bleach. If you are using a product that contains either of these two compounds, there are ways on how to lessen the increase in thermal sensitivity. One way to reduce the sensitivity is to reduce the time that the tooth whitening solution remains on your teeth. For example, if the instruction requires two hours per treatment, you can reduce this to only 1 hour. Another way is to increase the time between teeth whitening treatments. If the usual frequency is once per day, you can try doing the teeth whitening treatments every other day. If you can still experience discomfort then you can do both – decrease the teeth whitening treatment to 1 hour and perform the whitening treatments every other day. Remember, even people who are born that do not initially have sensitive teeth usually experience a temporary increase in sensitivity during treatment, so you will probably still experience some discomfort. Another suggestion is to brush your teeth before and after teeth whitening treatment with whitening toothpaste especially designed for sensitive teeth. These teeth whitening toothpastes usually use a fluoride compound to help de-sensitize your teeth. There are several different teeth whitening method on the market. If you just discuss your plans to whiten your teeth with your trusted dentist, for sure they may be able to provide you with a professional fluoride treatment that can be used at your own home. Another option available if you find teeth whitening products too uncomfortable for you is by using teeth whitening toothpastes which will clean your teeth with a mild abrasive rather than bleach them. These teeth whitening toothpastes do not use bleach, so you should no experience any added sensitivity, but they will not whiten your teeth as much as teeth whitening bleach do. If you have sensitive teeth, teeth whitening process or method may take longer and require from you a little extra effort, but you can be able to achieve the same result – to have a sparkling white teeth.

The Effect of Too Much Dental Bleach

No Comments 12 March 2010

The procedures in whitening teeth are safe, as long as it is done in accordance to the doctor’s advice. But there are still risks in doing so. When higher concentration bleach is used, a person is more likely to experience sensitive tooth. Increased sensitivity to temperature, pressure and touch are the ones bleaching can cause. People who went through gum recession and faulty restoration resulting to cracks in the tooth or leakage are also prone to sensitive tooth.   Gum irritation is one of the more likely effects of dental bleaching. This is because of the peroxide whiteners used in the procedure. Majority of dentists recommend the use of peroxide whiteners in tooth bleaching. Its whitening component and quick depletion into the mouth are amongst the reason why it is effective and is safe to use. But still, gum irritation may still occur especially during instances of higher concentration. Irritation may subside after few days. Although bleaching can make teeth whiter, there are some teeth which color could not be improved. These are those which went through restoration (e. g. bonding, dental crowns and porcelain veneers). So bleaching may result to an uneven color of the teeth, which isn’t favorable to the patient.    In addition to the possible risks listed, there are other information the would-be takers of the bleaching procedure must know. That, bleaching has nothing to do with the deterioration of the teeth’s strength. The result of the teeth whitening is noticeable approximately after two weeks. The effect of the procedure is more likely on how it will affect the sensitivity of the teeth. The bleaching procedure and the DFA-approved products used, doesn’t cause oral cancer and other kinds of severe condition. In order to keep the teeth white after bleaching, patients are advised to stop smoking and to avoid drinking dark colored liquids through straw. Moreover, there isn’t any identified effect of bleach solution, to the fetus/baby, being swallowed by preggies. But just the same, women are advised not to undergo this treatment yet while being pregnant.   With the information presented, it is safe to conclude that dental bleaching is generally not dangerous. It has minor consequences though if not done properly. The irritation, caused by bleaching, only takes a few days. Considering that it doesn’t trigger oral cancer, is one thing that majority of the population will want to hear about.

Will a home teeth-whitener effect my fake tooth?

5 Comments 02 March 2010

So I used to smoke and drink coffee alot, now that I quit I want to whiten my teeth. I do not have $300 to do it professionally. I want to use a home kit (you know, like those crest whitestrips) but part of my front tooth is fake because of a trampoline accident many years ago. I don’t know if the strips will whiten that tooth as well… I dont want to do it if they will be mismatched. Do you guys know if it will or not? Or if there is a particular brand to use?
