A kit from your dentist is most likely highly concentrated. Over the counter whitening strips are cheaper and effective, but for optimum results a kit from your dentist is the best bet!
While whitening, I wouldn’t recommend drinking anything that may stain your teeth, such as, coffee, soda (with color), juices, red wine…..if you do drink these things, drink through a straw. It is less likely to stain the front of your teeth.
Colorless foods and beverages are your best bet for optimum results. But, who wants to live on a colorless food diet? This is more pertinent when doing in office whitening, since the teeth will stain much easier after treatment for the first few days.
You should be fine carrying on with normal eating habits. I do strongly recommend drinking through a straw, though.
